CONCERT BAND I A - 350111

Students electing this course must demonstrate an intermediate or advanced level of sight reading. Students have a well-produced tonal quality/ pitch accuracy, and strive to be an independent singer. Emphasis is placed on becoming the very best vocal performer and on learning music from major time periods. Sight-reading skills and ear-training skills are continued. Teacher approval required. Performances are outside the school day. Credit for Graduation: Fine Arts

This course is designed to introduce basic guitar skills to students from a variety of musical backgrounds. The course will teach guitar methods, music theory, and application to general playing. Parts and maintenance of the guitar will be introduced as well as an introduction to chords, chords progressions, and reading music. Students will learn to read standard music notation. Students are exposed to a variety of jazz, blues, rock, funk idioms. Students will be expected to perform at an advanced level and will perform at concerts and other functions. Students playing trumpet, sax, trombone, and percussion instruments are required to be members of the Symphonic or Intermediate bands. Teacher approval required. Concert attire required. Students learn the skills needed to construct scenery, hang and focus lighting instruments, and implement a sound system. Students are trained in the usage of tools, lumber, and machinery. Students will play an active role in the current production. Students will also learn the appropriate vocabulary, and will learn about the many different technical theatre careers in a working theatre. Graduation Credit: Fine Art.

World Music Drumming - 35061

World Music Drumming is a course that is designed for music students with no prior background in music. Student explore the aural traditions of music that come from cultures that are unlike American culture (primarily the music of West Coast Africa and the Islands of the Caribbean). The coursework involves participation in drumming and singing activities! This is a hands-on class that has students "doing" through the majority of the class. Great for students who like to move and be active during class.
